While E astman and p atrician schoolteach er Elaine G oodale (Paquin) work to i mprove lif e for th e Indians  on the reser vation, Senator Da wes lobbies Pre sident Grant (T hompson)  for more humane trea tment, o pposing the belli cose stan ce of Gener al William Tecu mseh Sher man (Feore).
